Geography at Holy Family

Intent

At Holy Family, we believe that Geography helps to provoke and provide answers to questions about the natural and human aspects of the world. Our curriculum seeks to inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.

Our children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, as well as their place in it and our curriculum aims to equip all pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. Our curriculum is then enhanced further through a wider range of enrichment opportunities including workshops, Forest School and educational visits.

We understand that Geography helps prepare our pupils for today’s biggest global challenges, from climate change and health crises to migration and poverty. Therefore our curriculum will not just inspire an interest in the subject but provide children with the skills to understand these issues today in order to better tackle them in the future.

When our pupils leave in Year 6, they should have a secure knowledge and understanding of the local area and beyond including the location and characteristics of a range of the world’s most significant human and physical features. They should be able to use their geographical knowledge, understanding and skills to enhance their locational and place knowledge.

Implementation

Our curriculum is designed to develop knowledge and skills that are progressive, as well as transferable, throughout their time at Holy Family and also to their further education and beyond. Our geography curriculum is also closely linked to our surroundings and thereby enables our pupils to develop their knowledge of local area and of our diverse community.
Through a carefully sequenced body of geographical skills and knowledge, key concepts are taught and then developed across across year groups to ensure subject depth, coherence and progression. Children are also given opportunities to develop practical fieldwork skills throughout the carefully planned fieldwork sequence.

Geography at Holy Family is ambitious for all learners and children are given ample opportunities to embed knowledge and master new skills in a range of contexts.
